Have you ever wondered about living in early civilizations? I am sure, you did! I would prefer only to wonder about it, not to really live in there. Life without internet, gadgets and games is truly miserable for people today. However, how did this civilization started and how did it develop? What are the differences and similarities between early and modern civilizations? These are what I am going to tell in this writing.
Civilizations began as people lived together and grow social relationship between others. About 12,000 years ago, in Stone Age, most of the people were hunter gatherers. They followed groups of animals to hunt them. So, they only had temporary settlements. Their life was very difficult and uncomfortable. They couldn’t socialize with others because they only hunted only the amount they needed. So, trade system was unavailable in this period.
Then, about 10,000 years ago, their life began to change. They learned to grow crops and raise animals. So, they stopped hunting and started farming. Farming made people to have permanent settlements because they stayed in one place to grow crops and raise animals. There are many theories about how did people learned to farm, but we can’t assure that which one is the correct one. Even though they learned to farm, their life was still difficult because it was not easy to survive.
After they learned to farm, they got many foods. They got much more foods than they needed which led to food surplus. They got more than they needed so they began to sell things and some who needs more food would buy it. This is trade system; they didn’t have money in that period so they exchanged things like sheep and crops. Food surplus did not only lead to trade system, but also population growth. There were enough foods to feed many people. As these happen, people grew social relationships with other people and formed civilizations. This is called ‘Agricultural Revolution’.
There are 8 features of civilizations. Without these feature, it can’t be defined as a civilization. First feature is cities, it came from the farming center. As the population grew, these farms became villages and finally cities. All cities have government and culture. Second feature is government. They take charge on managing societies. They provide natural resources and protection from the enemies. Citizens are also paying to their government so that they have enough money. Third feature is religion. It is a shared belief about the God. Religion and government are connected, the rulers in early years said that they were sent from the heaven. People were afraid of the God, too. So, they offered offerings to make the God happy. Fourth feature is job specialization. In early civilizations, there were only hunter gatherers and farmers. Then, new jobs were added like priests, soldiers and craft workers.
Fifth feature is social classes; it is group of people in different level in the society. Highest level was priests and rulers who had most wealth and power, middle level was farmers and merchants and the lowest level was prisoners in war or poor people. Sixth feature is public works; it is a group of people gathered and constructing certain things. They were ordered to do so by their rulers. Seventh feature is art and architecture; people created architecture to serve for something. They also created many artworks to increase the country’s beauty. The eighth and the last feature is writing; it was created to calculated the crops harvested. Then, people began to write prayers and notes they needed.
Farmers invented many tools since Agricultural Revolution. They invented axe to cut down trees, pickaxe for mining natural resources, spades to dig soils, swords and bows to fight against the enemy and sickles to harvest crops. These tools were made up of stone, at first, in the Stone Age which began from about 12,000 years ago. They used stones to make sharp and pointed things. Stones weren’t that strong to make tools, but it was the best thing they could make in that period
Then the people began to make tools using bronze in Bronze Age which was about 5,000 years ago. Bronze was made by mixing copper and tin. Copper was soft to make it as tools and tin broke too easily, but when they are mixed and formed bronze, it is much harder and harder to break. Bronze was much stronger than stones, but people didn’t use it for farming tools because it was very expensive. Instead, they used it for weapons and structures.
Finally, people began to use iron to make tools in Iron Age which is about 3,000 years ago. Irons were not as expensive as bronze and it was also much stronger. However, it was difficult to make irons because it needed fire with high temperature and complicated way to make it. So, all tools were made up of iron from Iron Age.
There are advantages and disadvantages for early civilization. Good thing about early civilization is that there was no pollution during that time because there were no such machines that release harmful gases. Bad thing about early civilization is that the life will be boring and tired. There are no gadgets, games and internets. We also have to work very hard to make our living.
There are advantages and disadvantages for modern civilization. The advantage is that the life is much easier because of good machines. The disadvantage is that we have to study very hard to be successful in our life.
Early civilizations and modern civilizations were quite similar, but life was much different. They both have 8 features of civilization with a ruler. Now we call this ruler a president. People have to work in both of civilizations. However, the life was so different. In early civilizations, there were some wars between countries so it was quite dangerous. Also, we might be slaves if accident happens. There are almost on war in modern civilizations and we have all good systems. There are no social classes. So, I prefer o live in modern civilization than early civilizations.
However, people have different perspectives so some people prefer to live in early civilizations because they don’t like pollutions happening nowadays or they got too much stress for working or doing their homework.
Overall, I prefer to live in modern civilization because life is much easier. Without early civilizations we won’t exist today. So, it is important to learn about it, too!
