Geography Research Report
Humans have learned to live in this planet, Earth since long ago. They learned to farm and also producing goods. In order to learn this, we had to know our Earth’s aspect. What are the good land for farming and many things. This is well developed and it is now called ‘geography’. Study of our Earth’s aspect is divided into 3 pieces. The three pieces are human geography, physical geography and environmental geography. Pieces are always connected to form something. When human and physical geography reacts, environmental geography also changes.
Natural resource is a resource from our nature such as tree, water and coal. It was a huge impact to humans when they learned to use natural resources. It made our life easier. We built and made with natural resources. We can’t live without this. However, people are wasting the gift, even you and me. We have to save before it is too late.
Like cities and towns, where people live, is called settlement. As people starting to live together, they build their houses and it becomes a town. If it grows larger, it becomes a city. Settlement won’t be able to make without natural environment. Choosing a good site depends on environment. A settlement has to be near the water like river or lake so it is easier to get water. Water is used for washing, drinking and many other things. Without water, people can’t live and settlement is where people live. A settlement also has to have good view for protection like hills. If the settlement is on a high place, it is easier to see what is going on around it because they see downward. By having a good view, they can easily prevent from the attack from wild animals or people. Natural environments help human’s settlement. They need natural resources for construction such as woods, rock, sand and any other materials needed. Wood and rock is used to build houses and sand is used for making glasses. [Picture 1]
Settlement has different functions for different types of settlement. 4 types of settlement are Market and Industrial town, port and resort. Market town is where merchants buy and sell goods and its function is to sell and buy goods. Industrial town is a town that has many buildings and factories. Function of an industrial town is to produce goods. Port is where goods are loaded and unloaded by ships. Its function is to export and import things for the country. Resort is where tourists visit to enjoy themselves and its function is to help tourist temporally stay.
Different types of settlement also have different economic activities. People make their living by selling crops, animals and other goods in Market town. They are from farming. Farming need natural resources like water and it also need land to farm. This means it is affected by physical geography. People make their living by working in a factory in an industrial town. Factory operates with energy and energy comes from fossil fuels like coal and oil. People make their living by loading and unloading things from the ship in port. Ship is made up of natural resources. People make their living by working as a guide or hotel worker for tourists in resort.
Economic activities have changed overtime. Before the industrialization, people didn’t know how to get energy from burning fossil fuel. Their major economic activity was farming. So, there were almost no pollution caused by humans. However after the industrialization, humans started to use fossil fuel which pollutes the environment. The economic activities increased as they can produce goods easier and faster. Although it is useful to us, but it is not useful to our environments.
It’s not only that physical geography affects human geography, but also human geography affects physical geography. There are many effects, but none is greater than pollution. Pollution is mainly caused by human activity. Pollution has main 3 types; air pollution, water pollution, land pollution. Air pollution occurs when the air contains harmful gases like greenhouse gases. It causes major environmental issues like acid rain and global warming. Air pollution is usually caused by burning fossil fuel from power plants and emissions from transportations. When fossil fuels are burned and transportations operate, it releases carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and other harmful gases which go up to the atmosphere. These gases react with oxygen and water and drop as acid rain to Earth. These gases destroy ozone layer which protects Earth from the very hot sunlight. If ozone layer is destroyed, less sunlight will be reflected and Earth will be warmer.
Global warming has many effects. Global warming melts the ice and glacier in the poles. If all of the glaciers and ice is melt, sea level will rise about 60m. So, many places will be flooded. It is also killing animals living in poles as they have no space to stand on. Baby penguins also freeze to die. You might be curious why they freeze to die instead of dying because it is too hot. It is because in the South Pole, there is no rain at all, but as the temperature becomes warmer, it started to rain. If the rain is dropped on the hair of baby penguin, they won’t be able to withstand the coldness of South Pole. So, they will die. [Picture 2]
Water pollution is harmful compounds contained in water like river and lake. It is mainly caused by human throwing the waste to the water. It is from industrial waste, accidental oil leakage and trashes that we throw. Industries produce huge amount of waste which contains toxic chemicals and pollutants which changes color of the water, control the amount of mineral in the water and changes the temperature of the water. These affect the aquatic animals critically.
Land pollution is destruction of Earth’s surface. Land pollution is mainly caused by deforestation and mining activity. Land pollution cause soil pollution. Soil loses its nutrient so it is hard for plants to live. Many animals have lost their homes because of land pollution.
Population also affects the environment. If there are more people, we need more natural resources. We need more water and food. This also mean that it is also causing more pollution
Pieces of geography are always connected. They all affect each other. However, people are too greedy. We try to get more than what nature has given us. We may not exceed the limit. Balance between pieces of geography brings piece to Earth.
